Upgrading from 2.4 to 2.6

I have a couple of questions regarding to 2.4 -> 2.6 upgrade of our replica set (no sharding):

- Is it safe to go directly from 2.4.11 to 2.6.5?

- Instead of upgrading the running servers, we are planning to add 2.6 servers as new members to our current replica set (running on AWS, just gonna create new instances) then start removing old 2.4 ones. When the old master steps down, we'll be running on 2.6 completely. Is this a solid strategy?

- Also, if we keep 2.4 instances on the set for a while (1-2 days), having a 2.6 as master, would there be any issues with this mixed replica set? I'd like to be able to downgrade by just removing 2.6 nodes in case of an incompatibility in our software.

This should answer all of your questions.

You might want to look into MMS automation at some point. It makes upgrades quite painless and pretty quick.
